As you become more advanced in Lau gar weapons play an important part in your training.

The first 3 weapons learned in Lau Gar are as follows....

Wooden Staff

the wooden staff or 'gwan is one of the first weapons to be taught in Lau Gar. The staff is about 6 feet in length, 3.5cm in diamete and made of hard wood, making it very riged and completely inflexible.

Broad Sword

The Chinese broad sword (or Dan Dao) is a single edged weapon, with a stiff blade. The dan dao is used with speed and aggression combined with slashing and whirling movements. There is less emphasis placed on the thrusting movements that are a feature of straight, double edged swords although such movements do occur in Lau Gar dan dao forms.

The Butterfly Knives
The butterfly knives (or Wu Dip Dao) are mainly a southern Chinese weapon. They are more like short swords than knives about the length of your forearm. Each knife has a blade edges on one side and a closed handle that protects the fingers. There is also a hook on the non-edged side of the blade which allows the practitioner to pivot the knife around so that it runs down the forearm. Rotating, slashing and chopping movements are common with this weapon.

Trident

The Trident or tiger fork is is closely associated with the style's founder, Lau Sam Ngan "Three Eyed Lau" who was a tiger hunter. The trident is 6 foot staff made of hard wood and is usually very thick with a large steel trident or fork at its head. The tiger fork is a heavy weapon weighing around 30 - 40 lbs requiring both skill and strength to use..
